Win Win for the Steelers QB situation

I’ve been a Steeler fan since I can remember. Before I knew how to write my name. Before I

knew how to cook grilled cheese. Before I knew how to drive a car. It’s been 26 years rooting for

the black and gold and for almost two of those decades I’ve got to thoroughly enjoy QB play. For

18 seasons Big Ben trotted out to Heinz Field. He would consistently throw for 300 yards, shake

off defenders like they were in pee wee, and lead 4th quarter comebacks. Now what do we get

on Sunday vs the Jets? A pivotal moment in the 2024-2025 season.

Look, the last couple of years have not gone well. If it wasn’t for a hall of fame coach, I don’t

think we would have made the playoffs 3 of the last 4 seasons. We don’t get any amusement

getting in and then losing in the wildcard, which is why Sunday is so massive. It’s also why it is a

win win for every Steeler fan across the globe. We have a 35 year old future hall of fame

quarterback that we were able to sign for dirt cheap. We also have a 25 year old freak athlete

who just proved for 6 games that he is able to get us in the win column. So why is this a win

win?

If Russ comes in on Sunday and plays lights out, just like another vet hall of famer has been

doing (Joe Flacco) then we have our guy for the rest of the year. You take a QB that has been to

multiple Super Bowls and is still in his mid 30s and give him a top 10 defense. I watched Russ

throw for 26 TDs and 8 INTs last year playing for a team that didn’t even know what day of the

week it was. But what happens when Russ comes in and struggles for two weeks in a row?

Well, our defense has already proved that it can single handedly win us games when the QB

struggles. If we find out Russ is not the answer, you go back to Fields who went 4-2 for us

through 6 games. The 25 year old can still learn a ton sitting behind a future hall of famer. Do

we all love that Fields is a freak athlete and can change the game with his feet? Of course we

do. I think Arthur Smith and Russ could win some big games this year while we prepare for

Fields to be the long term answer.

How do the Steelers not take a step forward?

It’s that time of the year again. Football is back baby. Rooting for the Steelers the last 10 years has to be a top 5 most stressful job in America. I’m talking right there with air traffic control, school bus driver, and wedding planner. Do we finish under .500? Nope… Do we get to enjoy fun offensive football? Nope… Do we find ways to win games? YEP.

Here’s what I’m getting at. Last year we finished bottom 8 in yards per game and bottom 5 in points per game. We made the playoffs and had an offense that didn’t know what day of the week it was. I don’t see a world where the Steelers are not better this year than they were in 2023.

Can you imagine if we just get average QB play from Russ or Justin Fields ? The defense is made up of some absolute dogs. Watt, Highsmith, Heyward, Minkah, Queen, JPJ, Herbig. We snuck into the playoffs last year with little to none offensive production. With an upgraded QB situation we can almost take a small step back on defense (which I don’t think we will) and still be okay. I’m locking us in as a 5 seed in the playoffs this year. Give me the boys in black and gold at 11-6 and a playoff run.

What Are We in For? HOTD Episode 8

Well… I’m not sure what we are getting into this Sunday at 9pm EST, but I know there is about to be Dragons and Fire. If you haven’t watched episode 7 yet, don’t read anything else that I am about to say. There have been some incredible episodes of Game of Thrones and even better episodes of House Of The Dragon. Aemond Targaryen riding in on Vhagar at the end of episode 7 and realizing he was outnumbered was up there with some of the best penultimate episodes we have seen. Not only are we in for a war to start episode 8, but I’m starting to get worried this is the end of Rhaenyra Targaryen. Like any other Game of Thrones or HOTD character we love, George R Martin finds a way to rip them away from us right when we are starting to connect with them.

Bold predictions for Episode 8. The dragon Sheepstealer that Rhaena Targaryen keeps trying to find is going to come up huge late in the episode. Right when Addam of Hull is down to his last move, Rhaena will swoop in and make a huge play for the good guys. Loudmouth Ulf the White finding a way to get Silverwing as his dragon after stumbling down into the cave was incredible. Hugh the Hammer is about to make a crazy play too! Hugh is taking over Vermithor (this scene was badass in episode 7) . I have a feeling we are staring at a Vermithor vs Vhagar matchup late in the 4th quarter this upcoming Sunday. Buckle your seatbelt and grab some popcorn (or pierogies if you are into that kind of thing. My mom makes the best pierogies).

Paul Skenes is a no brainer to start the All Star game

Tuesday, July 16th the MLB will host the 2024 All Star game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Rumor has it everything’s bigger in that state. You know what the Pittsburgh Pirates have that’s big? I mean really big and it’s not the line for pierogis behind left field. They have a 6’6” 235 pound horse who is 5-0 on the year with 78 strikeouts and looks like a 10 year vet. There is absolutely no reason the MLB shouldn’t have Paul Skenes starting on national television for the world to see on July 16th.

I’m not sure who is capable of making this decision, but you’re going to have your largest audience tune in for the first 1-2 innings of the game. If Skenes starts this game you’ll have every social media platform going nuts about this guy. From Instagram and X all the way to Myspace and Club Penguin it’s all people will be talking about.

To add to the argument, Skenes is set to make his next start on Thursday, July 11th against the Brewers. It is a perfect 5 days away from the All Star game on the 16th. The MLB needs to understand how this is going to affect baseball if he gets to start next Tuesday night. All the sticky IPad kids who control the algorithms on the internet will be posting about it. Before you know it, Jennifer Coolidge (“you make me want to eat a hot dog real bad”) and Caitlin Clark (girl friend of former Iowa hooper Connor McCaffery) will be tuned in to the television screen with their jaws dropped over how hard this guy throws a baseball.

There’s a chance the Pirates make a run at a wildcard spot in the second half of the season. Starting Skenes is going to get a lot of baseball fans interested in every start he has for the rest of the year. The MLB has a chance to do something great and get a lot of people rallied behind this former number 1 overall pick.
